THE BIG PICTURE: Carbon Capture Ambitions
Ramping Up
Only two commercial-scale coal-fired power plants are currently operational in the world that use carbon capture and
storage (CCS) technology. However, the International Energy Agency's (IEA's) March 2023-released carbon capture,
utilization, and storage (CCUS) dataset suggests five more full-chain projects capturing carbon dioxide (CO2
) from
power and heat facilities (including waste-to-energy plants) are under construction. Another 73 others are in the
planning phase, slated to be operational by the 2040s. Notes: Years cited indicate estimated operation start dates. Mtpa

Despite recent developments, only two commercial power plants have
been retrofitted with carbon capture.
The 115-MW Boundary Dam
Unit 3 in Saskatchewan,
Canada, began capturing
carbon in 2014 and has a
capture capacity of about 1
Mtpa.
Petra Nova in Texas began
operations in December
2016 with a post-combustion
capture capacity of 1.4
Mtpa. Placed in reserve
shutdown in May 2020, the
project was restarted on
Sept. 5, 2023.
