Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), long known for its large fleet of coal plants, has dedicated
itself to becoming " one of the nation's leading providers of low-cost cleaner energy
by 2020 " The transition is well under way, with plans to retire about 2,700 MW of coalfired
capacity by the end of 2017 and for construction or acquisition of five combined cycle
plants with a combined capacity of about 4,000 MW to date. The latest addition to the TVA
system is the 880-MW John Sevier Combined Cycle Plant, located near Rogersville, Tenn.
The 704-MW John Sevier Fossil Plant on the same site will be retired by the end of 2015.

30 Claus C Combined Cycle Power Plant, Massbracht, Limburg Province, Netherlands
This repowering project took a simple-cycle plant and doubled its output by converting
it to a combined cycle plant. In the process, the owner improved plant efficiencies
and operational flexibility while lowering carbon dioxide emissions.
34 Enecogen Power Station, Rotterdam, Netherlands
This Dutch plant provides operational flexibility to a region that is committed to
increasing the percentage of renewables on the grid. Despite tricky site conditions
for the construction phase, its location across an inlet from a liquefied natural gas
terminal should prove advantageous in the long run.
38 Glow Phase 5 Combined Cycle/Cogeneration Project, Rayong, Thailand
The project team for this new plant pulled off an accomplishment that seemed impossible
given the constrained space. In the end, thanks to their ingenious solutions,
the plant may produce more power per square meter than any power plant in Asia.
40 John Sevier Combined Cycle Project, Rogersville, Tennessee
This large plant, part of Tennessee Valley Authority's plan to build a cleaner fleet,
came in under budget and ahead of schedule and includes the first of GE's new generation
of dual-fuel combustion turbines.
44 LCEC Generation Plant, Lovington, New Mexico
As with many new gas plants, Lea County Electrical Cooperative's 46.7-MW gas engine
plant was built with flexible operation in mind, in part to pair well with a nearby wind
farm. It was completed well ahead of schedule and demonstrates in several ways why
gas plants are winning the popularity contest for new generation these days.
48 Lodi Energy Center, Lodi, California
If you want a glimpse of the future, you need look no further than this plant. It uses
treated municipal wastewater for cooling and is the first Siemens Flex-Plant 30 " faststart "
combined cycle plant in the U.S. The operational flexibility it enables is becoming
increasingly valuable in renewables-heavy California.
50 University of Iowa Research Park Tri-Generation Power Plant, Iowa City, Iowa
Some of the most energy efficient and fuel-flexible power plants can be found on
campuses. This combined heating, cooling, and power plant can burn landfill gas as
well as natural gas to level a university campus's peak demand.
