Cogeneration: The Path to Net Zero

Achieving energy security through independence, efficiency

New intermittent renewable energy systems will require massive
investments in smart and fast-starting combined heat and power
plants fueled by widely available clean fuel sources in the form of
biogas, biomethane, sewage gas, and green hydrogen.

Keeping HVDC converters cool
Renewable energy cannot always be generated where
it's needed, but is available in abundance elsewhere. For a
climate-neutral future, transmission grids play a key role.
The German manufacturer of heat exchangers thermofin
developed a special series of dry coolers, which are used
worldwide at the converter stations of high-voltage direct
current transmission lines. The units are tailored for the
particular requirements of the energy sector like robustness
and reliability. Converter cooling systems with more than 300
megawatts of cooling capacity have been installed worldwide
recently. Numerous offshore wind farms like BorWin 3 rely
on thermofin coolers for their connection to the mainland.
They are used to connect countries like Norway and Germany
by the NordLink HVDC line or Great Britain with France,
Norway and Denmark. Canada's Lower Churchill Project,
transmission lines in India or between Ethiopia and Kenya,
for example, rely on German cooling technology. thermofin
offers units for horizontal or vertical installation, as well as
V-units, which provide particularly high output in a limited
space. The coolers can be equipped with ladders, railings and
tilting fans for easy cleaning. To cushion peaks in cooling
power demand and for high temperature environments,
thermofin offers a variety of evaporative cooling options.
