Carroll said Powin will use the Madrid
office " to support many more projects
in Europe and the larger EMEA region.

time zone as our customers will enable
us to provide them with superior customer

Galp officials have said the company-which
is one of the largest energy
groups on the Iberian Peninsula-recently
began construction of one of Europe's
largest electrolyzers to produce
green hydrogen, or hydrogen produced
from renewable energy resources. The
company, in collaboration with Japanese
multinational company Mitsui, also
is building a 270 kilotonnes per annum
(ktpa) advanced biofuels unit in Sines,
a town about 150 kilometers (93 miles)
south of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
That joint venture, which will use technology
from Axens, aims to produce renewable
diesel and sustainable aviation
fuel using waste residues. Axens' technology
is being used in the conversion
of oil and biomass into cleaner fuels.
Galp also has been expanding its electric
vehicle charging network, already
the largest in Portugal.
" As Galp keeps growing its renewable
energy capacity aiming to transform
its industrial base to produce
green fuels and sell renewable energy
to its clients, [energy] storage solutions
are key to ensure a steady supply
of electrons to our businesses, " said
Georgios Papadimitriou, Galp's executive
director in charge of Renewables,
New Business, and Innovation. " Batteries
also add to the competitiveness
of our renewable energy portfolio by
making solar and wind power available
when they are most needed. "
Carroll said, " In addition to ramping
up our work in Europe, Powin has been
supporting decarbonization across the
globe. In Australia, we are supporting
the Waratah Super Battery, which will
reside at the site of the old Munmorah
Power Station, a 1,400-MW coal-fired
power plant serving Sydney, Australia,
and beyond, ultimately providing reliable
power for more than 8 million people.
The project will ensure that nearby
Australian cities will have access to
more energy from existing generators
while reducing the risk of power disruptions
and replacing the retiring coalfired
plant with cleaner energy. "
Carroll said Powin last year " signed

a memorandum of understanding with
Suntech and Rept Battero for an 86MWh
clean energy project in Indonesia
with Vena Energy. " Powin also is providing
energy storage services for the Sunstreams
Complex, which Carroll said " is
a large PV-plus-storage project located
near Palo Verde Nuclear Plant " in Arizona.
Carroll said, " Powin is supplying 728
MW/3,010 MWh of energy, which consists
of three projects-Sunstreams 3:
215 MW/955 MWh AC; Sunstreams 4:
300 MW/1,200 MWh AC; and Serrano:
213 MW/855 MWh AC. "
Ardian's announcement of its BESS
project in Finland comes on the heels
of the group's purchase of two Finnish
wind farms last year with more than 27
MW of combined generation capacity.
The BESS installation is a joint venture
between Ardian's ACEEF and Lappeenrannan
Energia, a Finnish municipal energy
company. The Mertaniemi project
is expected to come online in the spring
of 2025 and is located near the Mertaniemi
power plant in Lappeenranta.
Ardian said the company's investment
portfolio in renewable energy in
the Nordic countries is about €1.2 billion
($1.3 billion). The portfolio includes
wind farms with more than 500 MW of
generation capacity. Ardian also is the
parent of Nevel, a renewable energy
company active in district heating, industrial
utilities, and biogas across Finland,
Sweden, and Estonia. Ardian also
recently acquired Verne Global, a company
that owns and operates data centers
in Finland. Verne Global said the
deal supports the company's expansion
plans for European data centers
that would be powered by low-carbon
and renewable energy resources.
Benjamin Kennedy, managing director
of Renewables in Ardian's infrastructure
team, said of the BESS
project, " The investment in a new battery
storage system, which is a first for
Ardian's clean energy evergreen fund,
is an essential part of our strategy in
Finland. We identified an opportunity to
scale Finland's wind capacity and connect
battery storage technology to create
a balanced and productive energy
system. With our existing strong presence
and network in the Nordic countries,
and our expertise in financing
and operating long-term renewables
projects, Ardian is perfectly placed to
foster this new market opportunity. "
