PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY is a concept that has been
explored over the years in a number of disciplines, but
with little attention paid to engineers. A more specific
component of professional identity is engineering identity,
which warrants further investigation due to positive impacts
on retention. The purpose of this study was to investigate
how participation in an engineering-based living-learning
community affects students' professional and engineering
identities and to describe these identities within a college
of engineering. Results revealed that some subscales of
professional identity and engineering identity indicated
statistically significant differences by participation in a
living-learning community. Implications for future research
and practice are discussed.

Living-learning communities (LLCs) were created to help bolster
faculty-student interaction as well as active and collaborative
learning. In many cases, LLCs can be used to create an intersection between a student's academic life and their residential life
(Shushok & Sriram, 2010), making them high-impact educational
experiences (Kilgo et al., 2015; Kuh, 2008). In a study of livinglearning programs, Inkelas (2008) developed a thematic typology
of LLCs consisting of 17 primary categories, including programs
that focus on " grouping students of a particular major or disciplinary interest " (p. III-3). LLCs have been adopted by higher education institutions across the nation as a means to greatly enhance
curricular coherence and deepen student learning (Shushok &
Sriram, 2010).

A student's development inside and outside the classroom is
an incredibly important attribute to consider when developing
professional and personal identity (Inkelas, 2008; Inkelas et al.,
2018). Inkelas et al. (2018), for example, noted that studies of LLCs
have shown " the power in helping students discern future career
options " (p. 75). This is especially true when looking at engineering
students and their confidence in the subject matter of their coursework; students in engineering LLCs are reported to have among
