Investigating the Mental Health of Housing Staff DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. In this study, more than 80% of campus housing staff in this sample met the diagnosable criteria for anxiety and depression in the wake of COVID-19. How do you promote mental health and wellness at your institution for all levels of staff? What additional steps can you take to improve institutional or departmental support regarding mental health? 2. What mental health resources are available on your campus and in the surrounding community for campus housing staff? Consider employee assistance programs, student counseling services, and counseling in the community. How can your institution ensure that these resources are affordable and accessible to all staff? 3. COVID-19 impacted live-in professional staff more considerably than it impacted those in other positions, with many of these staff on the front lines of pandemic response with students. What protections and support can your institution put in place for these staff in the event of a campus-wide crisis situation? 4. The mental health of campus housing staff who identified as Hispanic/Latino/Spanish was impacted more than it was for White staff in this sample. What additional support can be provided to Latinx campus housing staff when considering mental health? 5. The author calls for more training for university housing leadership to promote a culture of healthy work/life balance. What steps can you take to improve this culture at your institution? What would additional training for leadership look like to promote work/life balance among all staff?
