LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The Journal Board is proud to bring you the October 2023 issue of The Journal of College
and University Student Housing. Each article in this issue takes on a well-established norm
in our field (employee training, scholar-practitioner connects, the Oshkosh Placement
Exchange, housing deposits, and student sense of belonging) and examines them in
new ways. Each manuscript in this issue ends by outlining important implications for
research and practice in our field. As always, we encourage you to read and reflect on
the contents of this volume and how the information in these articles can help as we all
process student needs and trends and needs in housing accommodations. Think about
the content, share it with others, and see where the conversation leads.
Erica Barton starts off this issue with an action research study to examine employees'
understanding of the conditions impacting learning in the workplace. After
conducting interviews, Barton developed, implemented, and evaluated an online
learning module on defensive routines (a characteristic of White supremacy
cultural norms) and found that the module was effective in helping practitioners
develop knowledge and skills to identify and disrupt defensive reactions in themselves
and others, providing a road map for future equity training. Next, James C.
Stoner and Stephen A. Berg reviewed 50 years of authorship trends in The Journal
of College and University Student Housing to better understand who has shaped
the field of campus housing in the form of knowledge generation through this
peer-reviewed scholarly publication. They found that since the 1980s, there has
been a dramatic decline in practitioner contributions to this publication and offer
many suggestions for further research and tangible strategies to facilitate environments
empowering practitioners to publish. In the third article of this issue, Steven
Tolman, Daniel W. Calhoun, Stacy Fisher, Lauren Crouse, Abbigayle Boushele-Walter,
and Marc Nylen advocate for the inclusion of higher education and student affairs
faculty in the Oshkosh Placement Exchange (OPE). Their article provides a model for
this collaboration and shares the perspectives of those who have participated in such
an effort. Next, Cody T. Huebner, Jak R. Koett, Kailyn M. Lamm, and Tony N. Tyler
