The Declining Role of Practitioners
There seems to be a divide between scholars and practitioners:
scholars conducting research without the assistance of practitioners,
scholars knowingly generating knowledge in the form of journal articles that
were not as beneficial to practitioners as they could be, and, more broadly,
researchers writing for other researchers instead of practitioners.

publication, the minimum information provided for each article included the author's
name and institution; however, sometimes only a name was provided, and other times
their position title was also included. Because the specific details provided in each issue
about the authors varied over the course of JCUSH's history, some gaps existed after
the initial data collection.
The existing gaps typically included either position title, institution, or both. Every
effort was made to identify the correct data where gaps existed. Such efforts included
targeted internet searches for author résumés and curriculum vitarum, institutional
documents, professional social media profiles, and articles published by the authors in
other journals during the same time period. Since many of the remaining gaps were consolidated
in the 1970s, we contacted former JCUSH editor Kenneth L. Stoner, who filled
in many gaps existing during his editorial tenure. Finally, there was a sub-population
of authors with missing position titles who shared authorship with another former
JCUSH editor, Donald F. Whalen, who was also contacted and filled in those gaps.
Because data were entered verbatim from the issues and the other listed sources,
we cross checked every institution name and author name to look for discrepancies
in the presentation of JCUSH data between issues: for example, our transformations
of " Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University " to match " Virginia Tech "
and retroactively applying university status to Georgia College authors prior to 1996.
Institutions were then coded by state and regional affiliation (where applicable), a
coding schema informed by the ACUHO-I recognized independent associations
(ACUHO-I, 2023).
Similarly, every effort was made to ensure an accurate counting of authors whose
names may have changed between publications. This was possible when names were
fairly similar and pictures of the author matched. For example, " Christy D. Moran "
(from Volume 31, Issue 2) was transformed to match " Christy Moran Craft " (in
Volume 35, Issue 2).
TREATMENT OF DATA
The full dataset included 1,436 author contributions across 770 manuscripts between
1971 and 2020. We categorized each author contribution by manuscript type: original
research (n = 1,075), book review (n = 84), abstract (n = 59), trends (n = 57), point
of view (n = 45), historical commentary (n = 32), theme issue introduction (n = 31),
