Residential Affinity Efforts and Sense of Belonging
RESULTS
The first research question sought to understand which RAEs contribute to students'
perceived sense of belonging to their residential community. Table 3 shows the number
and percentage of students who chose each of the RAEs as a top-five factor contributing
to their sense of belonging. The items chosen the most frequently were residential
community events (59%), swag (50%), personal interactions with the FIR (46%),
and personal interactions with the RA (36%).
For the second research question, we sought to understand the relationship between
RAEs and students' perceived sense of belonging to their residential community.
We ran Levene's test for equality of variances and ran either a Kendall's tau-b
correlation if homogeneity of variances was not met or a Pearson point-biserial correlation
if homogeneity of variances was met. Table 4 (see page 86) indicates the relationships
between RAEs and SOBSs, with asterisks indicating significance. Of note,
the residential community introduction program was removed as an RAE because the
sample size was insignificant (n = 3). All other RAEs are listed in Table 4, but only the
statistically significant relationships are described in the following paragraphs.
