Re-visioning Bulletin Boards
the depth of learning and to compare learning demonstrated in this study against the
results of the survey.
RESEARCH PROCESS
In this photovoice project, three students chose to work together and capture images
of all the bulletin boards in the entire residence hall, while a fourth created a comic
strip portraying his interaction with one particular bulletin board. From the three students
who worked together, Juan contributed 10 photos, Hector submitted eight photos,
and Christian captured six photos.1 Each student featured bulletin boards covering at
least four topics, which allowed the group to discuss which topics stood out to them as
they completed the activity. By capturing images of all the bulletin boards in the entire
residence hall, the trio juxtaposed the full collection of bulletin boards with the limited
selection typically experienced by a student. In the interview and presentation, they
discussed the range of bulletin board topics, variation in exposure due to bulletin board
placement, and compelling or off-putting design elements. Figure 1 shows an image
the group highlighted as an interesting topic and well-designed board.
