Re-visioning Bulletin Boards
The fourth student, Steven, creatively depicted a first-hand student experience by
utilizing a comic strip format with captions and staged photos. He selected a bulletin
board that explains gender pronouns and utilized comic-style thought bubbles to
portray a sequence of moments that lead to meaningful learning from the bulletin
board. Steven worked with an unnamed collaborator who served as his photographer,
as Steven directed the shots and appeared in several frames. Figure 2 shows the full
collection of eight labeled images.

Through its participatory design, photovoice amplifies the lived
experiences of marginalized people, the relations between people
in shared spaces, and the community as a whole.
