The winners of EMA’s Baroque Performance Competition are off to a fast start and five concerts into its existence, the ensemble Pallade Musica won the Grand Prize at Early Music America’s first Baroque Performance Competition. The competition, described as “a marathon contest,” was held in New York last October and featured six finalists selected from a pool of 35 applicants. The name Pallade Musica is an Italian take on “Athena’s Music,” and the Italian idiom has brought the group good fortune so far. After playing together for several months, Pallade Musica members officially launched their group and their own concert series in August 2012 at the Chapelle NotreDame-de-Bon-Secours in Montreal. To inaugurate their concert series, Pallade crafted a program of 17th-century Italian music, “Terreno e Vago,” the same one they performed for the EMA competition. “Terreno represents the earth, that which is profane, secular, regular, and defined,” read the program notes. “The contrasting vago is music of reflection: it is irregular, spiritual, sacred, elusive, and vague.” You could read this description as a manifesto of what the group aspires to evoke in much of their music. Baroque flutist Sandra Miller, who teaches in Juilliard’s Historical Performance Program in New York, was a member of the EMA competition jury.
