Five ensembles have been selected as
finalists for Early Music America's 2014
Baroque Performance Competition. The
finalists were chosen from a pool of
applicants by an independent panel of
three judges. The First Place Award
includes a cash prize of $3,000, bookings on five major early music concert
series, and other benefits. The ensembles
will compete in a free concert presented
in association with University of Chicago
Presents on October 11 at the Reva and
David Logan Center for the Arts in
Chicago, IL. Besides the First Place
Award, there will be a $1,000 Audience
Award, voted on by the audience, and a
Presentation Award of $500 to the group
that presents the most innovative concert in terms of inventive programming,
compelling program notes, and undeniable stage presence. In alphabetical
order, the finalists (with links to sound
samples) are:
Consort Laurentia (http://tinyurl.com/
lk9q5u3). Peggy Bélanger, soprano;
Michel Angers, theorbo, lute, and
Baroque guitar. Founded in 2012, Consort Laurentia offers concerts of arias
and instrumental music staged intimately to allow close contact between the
artists and the audience. Fellows of the
prestigious Fondazione Marco Fodella,
the duo has specialized in the early
music of Milan, Italy. Based in SaintJean-Port-Joli, QC, they are very active in
the international music scene, especially
in Italy, Switzerland, and Spain. They
offer a high level of musical sophistication in energetic performances that go
beyond the level of recitals. Their performance on their Amanti, io vi so dire
CD was praised as "great" by Fanfare
magazine.
Elixir Baroque Ensemble (http://
tinyurl.com/kbrjmrk). Sara-Anne
Churchill, harpsichord; Valerie Gordon,
violin; Elyssa Lefurgey-Smith, violin;
Justin Haynes, viola da gamba. Founded
in 2010, Elixir gives new life to 17thand 18th-century music by serving up
intoxicating programs combining the
lyrical with the virtuosic and the wellknown with the newly discovered.
Elixir's innovative programming and
bold performances have quickly established the group as a major proponent of
early music in its home region of Greater
Toronto. The ensemble has been a frequent guest on several Toronto music
series and as part of the Toronto Handel
Festival, and it presents its own series,
on which it is often joined by members
of Tafelmusik. In April 2014, the group
gave the world premiere performance of
The Sad Life of Laure Beausejour, composed specifically for Elixir by Frank
Horvat. The ensemble has performed
and given master classes at the University of Fredonia (SUNY) and has coached,
soloed, and led performances with the
Community Baroque Orchestra of Toronto. It is also a regular guest of the
Kingsway Conservatory of Music.
Infusion Baroque (http://tinyurl.com/
ppcjofq). Alexa Raine-Wright, flute and
recorder; Sallynee Amawat, violin;
Camille Paquette-Roy, cello; Rona
Nadler, harpsichord. Montreal-based
Infusion Baroque seeks to draw new
audiences to Baroque music by integrating high-quality chamber music performance with other artistic media. Past projects include "The Art of Corelli," an
evening of chamber music and visual art
inspired by the composer's collection;
and "Who Killed Leclair," an interactive
murder mystery soirée based on the
unsolved murder of the famous composer. Members of Infusion Baroque have
appeared with Arion Baroque Orchestra,
Ensemble Caprice, Les Voix Baroques,
Theatre of Early Music, Pacific Baroque
Orchestra, Haymarket Opera, Ottawa
Baroque Consort, American Baroque
Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra. Infusion Baroque's upcoming
season includes a Baroque-inspired fashion show, an interactive games night
based on the workings of the music business, and an evening of Baroque music
selections paired with artisanal beers.
