t’s a good thing Tim Taylor didn’t listen to his school counselors who told him his future lay in paint technology, not aerospace. “They told me to stay as far away from aerospace as possible,” he said. As a boy, he was always interested in airplanes, not as a pilot, but as an engineer. “I wanted to build airplanes, not fly them,” he said. Now as chief executive officer, owner and board member for FreeFlight Systems, he has proven those counselors wrong as Taylor continues his successful aerospace career. After earning a degree in electrical and electronic engineering, Taylor’s first job in the aerospace industry, in 1972, was to translate French systems hen you work in this industry, you don’t have to motivate engineering drawings into English yourself to come to work every day. He stayed at Marconi for 20 years, both in England and later in the U.S. His next stop was at Allied Signal, before the Honeywell acquisition, first in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and then in Phoenix, Ariz. From there, his next position called for a move to Texas in 1994 to work at the newly formed Elbit Systems of America. He took over that business in 1997, a position he held for 11 years. During his tenure at Elbit Systems, Taylor led the company’s expansion by strengthening its capabilities, restructuring the organization, diversifying product offerings and making several key acquisitions. In addition, he strategically branded the company as a major supplier to the U.S. government, including
