good business climate, and most people are impeccable. I have learned that if you take good care of customers, you should be able to do pretty well for yourself. MSP is a good company. I’m not a pilot, machinist or an engineer, and I wasn’t sure how I would grow the company. But, we have talented people, great products and good processes, and I simply started making sales calls.” In his spare time, Goode serves on boards: two company boards, and one nonprofit board. “I promised my wife I wouldn’t go on more than three at a time,” he said. He also enjoys traveling and playing golf, although he confesses, “I’m not a very good golfer.” He and his wife have three sons.
One son is already working with him at MSP, one is in college studying entrepreneurship, and the youngest son, age 12, is planning to take over the entire enterprise. He is grateful to his family. “My mother and father gave me constant support and reassurance,” he said. “My wife and I hope to provide the same to our children.” Goode remains enthusiastic about his work. “I love people, and I like building teams, adding value and pursuing new opportunities,” he said. As for advice to someone starting in business, he said, “Find your passion and go at it full bore. Risk early and often, because there is a formula of risk and reward. Most people who are successful in business have had failures, but we often learn more from our failures than from our successes.” From his one mentor, Bottle, Goode
learned the biggest problem with companies not doing well is not a lack of cash, systems or product. “According to Harry, the biggest problem is ego,” Goode said. “Owners and senior management don’t know what they don’t know. That’s why I have always been receptive to good advice and sought counsel when I needed it.” His biggest mentor remains his father, however. “As a little kid, I idolized my father and wanted to be like him,” Goode said. “I would go to his office, and he would show me around and let me add up numbers on the calculator. He would work for a while, and then we would go goof off. As my dad grew in his job, he had a big responsibility and the respect of the people who knew him, and I wanted to be like that.” In short, Goode concluded, “I still seek his advice.” q
