AIM AIR Serves on the Front Lines of Humanity
ith a jolt that shakes the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan’s entire fuselage, a weary pilot lands on a tiny piece of hard ground carved from South Sudan’s savannah landscape. He breathes a momentary sigh of relief at the easy landing in this desolate place far removed from the modern world’s conveniences. Despite the choking dust kicked up by the Caravan, dozens of displaced African villagers jump and cheer in delight. Living nearby in a temporary camp, the aircraft is their lifeline to medical help, food, supplies and messages of hope. These beleagured souls, young and old, have seen and experienced much grief and violence for many years, fleeing from their country’s violent civil war. Today’s lifesaving delivery wouldn’t have made it if not for the dedication and talents of several stalwart avionics experts back in Nairobi, Kenya. Three days earlier, Joe Wagnell, avionics technician, and Steve Moffitt, radio base manager, scrambled to install a Garmin 530WT into the Caravan. Chief inspector Jim Levander worked with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority on the necessary approvals for the installation. With time short and the stakes high, the Caravan had to be equipped with the Garmin 530WT to meet the TAWS-B requirement for Kenyan airspace. In just three days, the pilot

needed to return to Juba, South Sudan, where missionaries would be waiting to make their deliveries. The technicians working long hours to get the Caravan up and running are part of AIM AIR, the aviation arm of Africa Inland Mission, a Christian missionary. AIM AIR helps move missionaries, cargo and lifesaving supplies to the remote villages of East and Central Africa. Located at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, the Part 145 repair station is responsible for maintaining a diverse fleet that includes DC-3, King Air 200, Cessna Caravan, 210, 206 and Amphibious 206 aircraft. In their small, 411-square-foot workshop on the second floor of the four-story AIM AIR hangar, Moffitt and Wagnell troubleshoot, repair and service avionics systems, radios and instruments. A team of some 30 families operates the fleet of 12 aircraft, flying more than 1.5 million kilometers each year, serving the needs of 80-plus Christian organizations and hundreds of missionaries. They travel among nine different countries over 8 million square kilometers to some of the most dangerous, forgotten, war-torn places on the planet. “The people we serve are working in church planting, evangelism, community development, medical missions, children’s education, pastor training, emergency relief, Bible
