said she has her children pick out thank-you cards when selecting Christmas cards. Of course, gratitude isn’t totally lost. Recently, I was on a flight when a late-arriving passenger was trying to shove his roller-board into the already full overhead. When the flight attendant came to help and rearranged various bags, even the flight attendant couldn’t make this passenger’s bag fit. The passenger stood by, slumped shoulders, fearing the worst. Finally, the flight attendant said, “I’ll just put this with my bag in the closet up front.” The passenger was stunned. “Thank you, thank you – I really appreciate it,” he said. The flight attendant nodded and the passenger continued, “I know you don’t have to do this, and I really appreciate it. It’s very kind of you. Really, I appreciate it. Thank you.” I think this passenger must have experienced a bad day, and this one act of kindness was pre-

venting him from going off the deep end. While flying, I experience either really wonderful, human, funny and helpful flight attendants or ones who are not so much. When I get a good one, I thank them on the way out. My hope, of course, has a bit of selfishness. Maybe with some encouragement, this flight attendant will continue his or her pleasant behavior. In fact, while I was reading up on thank-you notes, I came upon a theory that your children may appreciate. This theory claims that when a giver receives a thank-you note, it encourages the giver to not only continue to send gifts, but to up the ante a bit and send a little better present. If that’s not motivation to write a thank-you note, I don’t know what is. Perhaps some people were never taught how to write a thank-you note. It’s not too late to learn, and here are some helpful hints to write a thank-you note in five sentences. Begin with the person’s name. In the first sentence, say thank you in general terms for the gift as in “Thank you for the great pair of socks you sent for my birthday.” Next, write something nice about the present even if you hate it, such as “The socks are a beautiful shade of blue.”
