reviews of the Part 145 proposal at each of the AEA Regional Meetings in the U.S. We also spent a significant amount of time working with the aviation media to explain this proposal to the general industry maintenance providers. The final meeting on this proposal was with the Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy to explain the extreme cost of compliance of the “additional” changes that were not included in the declared purpose of the proposal, but nonetheless are extremely costly. Finally, $2 billion later, we pretty much know the dirty laundry of every politician in every state. After all of the debates, posters, signs and slogans, Washington escaped unscathed: Congress looks the same with the Republicans dominant in the House of Representatives and the Democrats dominant in the Senate. We have had two years of experience with a split Congress, so predicting the next two years is not a very far stretch. Hopefully, by the time this is published, we will have resolution to the fiscal cliff that is looming over the country on

New Year’s Day. As reported in the November edition of “The View from Washington,” we have the effects of the automatic budget cuts of sequestration looming and the expiration of the extended tax cuts that were implemented during the Bush administration and extended for the past four years. Regardless of the politics in Washington, what is clear is the need for worldwide austerity measures and the effect that these measures will have on AEA member companies. As we move forward into 2013, the word of the day will continue to be “efficiency.” We must continue our efforts to improve the efficiencies of our industry. It has certainly been a busy year, and 2013 doesn’t look to be easing up. Hopefully, with the input from the AEA Government and Industry Affairs Committee and the AEA board of directors, we will continue on the course of action that best supports your needs. Please continue communicating with your board of directors and consider serving on the committees. While there is a limited number of seats, participation on the AEA Government and Industry Affairs Committee, as well as all AEA committees, is open to all association members.
