In the third sentence, continue by stating how you will use the present: “These socks will be perfect when Joe and I go hiking in April.” Next, express a desire to see the person again as in “I’m looking forward to

seeing you at Bertie’s birthday party.” Finally, thank them again in slightly different words, such as “Thank you for remembering me at my birthday.” That’s it. Sign your name, address the envelope, slap a stamp on it and it’s done. One more tip: Use note cards rather than full sheets of stationery.

You’ll have less space to fill. If someone sends you money, generally thank them for their generosity rather than mentioning the specific dollar amount of the gift. What about emailing a thank-you note? It’s better than none, but the old-fashioned handwritten note is still the best. If you decide to email a thank-you note, elevate it by including a photo of you with the gift. An exception might be a business thank-you note to thank someone for a job interview. The thanks should be sent within 24 hours of the interview, and there’s good reason to send one. A survey by Career Builders found nearly 15 percent of hiring managers would reject a job candidate who neglected to send a thank-you letter after the interview, and 32 percent said they would still consider the thankless prospect but their opinion of him or her would diminish. With hiring so competitive, it makes sense to go the extra mile and personally write your thank-you notes. Beth Milligan, human resources manager at Aspen Avionics, agreed. “You would be surprised how many people don’t send a thank-you note,” she said. “Thanks get you noticed. Companies want to see you interested in the position, and that’s what the thank-you note says.” Perhaps the best rule of thumb to expressing thanks is just do it. Whether you thank a co-worker for covering for you, a relative for a gift or a prospective employer for an interview, you can’t go wrong by sincerely stating your appreciation. Do it verbally; do it in a handwritten note. Send an email, but do it. In short, having an attitude of gratitude is just good karma. Think how good you’ll feel knowing you’ve done the right thing. q
