What is a typical day?
I arrive around 7 a.m. and work to 4:30 or 5 p.m. – sometimes later. When I first arrive, I answer emails and voice messages and then spend the day answering phone calls and emails as they come in. I assist engineering as needed to determine problems that are not typically found in normal troubleshooting. I also write all the installation manuals for Chelton Flight System products, so I wear many hats.

Do you miss Idaho?
I’m a Pacific Northwest person who grew up in Washington and spent time in Montana and Idaho before moving to Texas.

Yes, especially during the summer.

obham Commercial Systems is a provider of integrated avionics systems and emergency locator systems for military and civil customers. Cobham’s avionics systems can be offered individually or integrated to provide an entire cockpit. Recently, Patricia Luebke, Avionics News contributor, spoke with Robert DuRall to learn more about his work at Cobham.

What do you like best about your job?
I enjoy the interaction with customers and dealers and assisting them in finding out what’s wrong and helping them successfully repair, troubleshoot and get the aircraft back in operation.

Do you travel as part of your job?
It depends. If I go somewhere domestically, I’ll be there for a couple of days. But, I do a lot of international travel, so I can be gone for two weeks at a time if I’m going overseas.

Tell me about your job at Cobham.
I am the senior manager of product support for Cobham Commercial Systems. That means I get a lot of phone calls and emails from a lot of people. I manage phone support and field support for

What’s the corporate culture like at Cobham?
I came from Chelton in Boise, Idaho, which had a small, startup type culture. When Cobham closed down Boise, they relocated a handful of people to Mineral Wells, Texas. S-TEC has always been a family community, with various members of a family – husband,

Did you start out to have a career in aviation?
I started in electronics in the U.S. Navy. When I enlisted, I had career options, so I enlisted as an avionics technician. When I got out of the Navy, I earned my degree in computer electronics, but I always had the aviation bug in me. Within two years of graduating, I started working for Honeywell in Renton, Wash., and
