This serves two important audiences. First, it endorses a program in the eyes of the industry – those businesses that will hire graduates. “You’re a customer of the industry as a school, and you want to make sure your final product, the student, is meeting or exceeding the industry expectations,” said Mike Adamson, AEA vice president of member programs and education. Second, and more importantly, it also validates a school in the eyes of parents. “It helps you market yourself to mom and dad,” Adamson said. “For the longest time in avionics, we

struggled with, what do they graduate in? What makes mom and dad care? Because mom and dad get Part 147 A&P mechanic; they understand that you’re going to the airlines and you’re going to make a good living, and that all works on paper. Avionics never had that.” Indeed, the rise in the push to avionics accreditation mirrors the changing nature of aircraft electronics, as mechanical instruments make way for an alphabet-soup of black boxes. The designation, then, separates the schools that offer a cursory DC-systems course from those that

teach the skills for troubleshooting aircraft systems with software-based devices. As a result, it separates those who train screwdriver operators from those who produce true technicians. In other words, a Part 147 school that claims to have an avionics program but isn’t accredited may not really have one. “It’s very subjective at that point, if you don’t have it accredited,” Adamson said. This can have some long-term repercussions.
