Eventually, customers will grow to expect the certification, too, according to Adamson. There already is background noise from manufacturers to require it among their dealers – just as they already do with their internal fieldservice and product-support techs. And, with good reason: no fault found on returned products. “There’s data that supports if (the product is) being improperly removed in the field and sent back to the factory, you’re wasting factory time and shop money,” Adamson said. “You might be inadvertently black-eyeing the product when, in fact, it was an air-

plane issue. You would have known if you were a certified technician.” With many different stakeholders recognizing certification as worthwhile, this should be ample reason for any technician to seek certification. Likewise, there’s no requirement the tech graduate from an accredited program – or even graduate at all – so long as they score 70 percent on the exam. Industry veterans, even without formal training, will find published prep courses helpful in achieving that, according to Adamson, and just as likely, they’ll know the material after years of experience. NCATT offers a pre-assessment on its website, and testing is provided free by the AEA at many of its events and regional meetings. But, AET is the foundation, and assessment doesn’t stop there.
