Mike Vanoosteroom of Thunder Bay, Canada, just finished his first year of aircraft maintenance at Confederation College with a cumulative 3.9 grade point average. Employed as an aircraft maintenance engineer apprentice by Wilderness North, Canada’s premier flyin fishing adventure, his job is to help look after a fleet of aircraft consisting of Cessna 180, de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, de Havilland DHC-3 Turbo Otters and a few air tractors. Vanoosteroom plans to become a student tutor to help the new incoming students get through their first year studies. He plans to spend the remainder of his apprenticeship hours with a company that is at the cutting edge of the technology, such as Westjet, Ornge (medical transport) or the Ontario Provincial Police.

Field Aviation Scholarship

Kyle Johnson of Lakeland, Fla., plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., to pursue a bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance. Ultimately, Johnson would like to work his way into maintenance management with an aviation equipment manufacturer, commercial airline or corporate flight department or freight carrier. Johnson is a member of the National Honor Society and has more than 400 hours of community service.

Garmin – Jerry Smith Memorial Scholarship

Mark Snyder of Pickerington, Ohio, spent five years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as an avionics technician, and then he returned to Ohio and found his home at Spirit Avionics in Columbus. Snyder is attending Ohio State University and is pursuing a degree in aviation systems. As part of a small team at Spirit, Snyder wants to help the company expand. He feels obtaining his pilot’s license extends the reach for potential customers and allows Spirit to offer quicker response time to customers in time-sensitive situations.

Flying Magazine’s Private Pilot’s License (two awards)

Jace Wickman of Belleville, Mich., plans to complete his FAA airframe and powerplant license from Michigan Institute of Aviation and later earn the Canadian M1 license. He wants to gain experience by working as an avionics technician on private corporate aircraft while pursuing a degree in aviation management. Wickman plans to focus on the business of aviation while building leadership experience. After several years in the industry, he plans to turn his talents into opening an MRO that specializes in avionics upgrades and modifications.

Gene Baker Memorial Scholarship

Robin Hill of Sacramento, Calif., is a technician for Krueger Aviation in Olivehurst, Calif. He currently is in the process of obtaining A&P certifications while learning to fly. In addition, Hill plans to earn an IFR rating. Hill’s experience maintaining, rebuilding and modifying general aviation aircraft, performing glass cockpit installs, full-panel builds and avionics upgrades will be enhanced with his pilot knowledge and a better understanding of the operation of the aircraft.

Flying Magazine’s Private Pilot’s License

Lindsay Tripp of Pendleton, N.Y., will attend Alfred University, where she will major in art and design with a minor in psychology. She later plans to pursue a master’s degree and a career in art therapy to introduce people of all ages to the wonders of art and how it can improve their lives. As a member of National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Math Honor Society, Tripp has been working on various volunteer and academic projects with those groups. She also is involved as the co-president of the Astronomy Club and is a member of the Shakespeare Lives Club.
