co-workers expect.
“Everything about your success
until you graduate is about you,”
said Emily Bennington, co-author of
“Effective Immediately: How to Fit
In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your
First Real Job.”
“It’s about what you brought to
the table; it’s about your brain. If
you fail a class, it’s because you
didn’t do the work.”
But now you’re in the workforce,
and your success is dependent on
adding value to a team that collaborates to achieve organizational goals.
“I think it’s really difficult for new
graduates to flip the switch from the
‘me’ game to the ‘we’ game,” she
said. “As a result, they end up making a lot of mistakes.”
The goal is learning to work with
others. At work, your individual
contributions – intelligence, new
ideas, and personality – are about
one-third what it takes to succeed,
Bennington said. The other twothirds comprise your relationship
with your boss and your colleagues.
Going into a new job with a flash
of blinding ambition will fail, especially when you respond to resistance with crossed-arm frustration
that alienates the people you need
on your side.
Instead, mind your “ilities,”
Bennington said. These include your
dependability and reliability with
tasks; humility among more experienced co-workers; accountability
and responsibility for results, mistakes and criticism; and punctuality
with time commitments. Study the
idiosyncrasies of professional etiquette, from doing more listening
than talking, to deferring to superiors, to avoiding gossip and solving
conflicts with co-workers directly
and maturely.
You will probably not get much
feedback or guidance on any of this,
so you’ll need to learn some things
on your own. It’s nothing personal;
your supervisor and your colleagues
just have more to worry about than
only you.
“Everyone is stretched very thin,”
Bennington said. “As a result, there’s
a slimmer chance you’re going to get
the one-on-one mentoring and feedback you’ve been so used to getting
from professors and parents.”
But do make sure you understand
your role.
“Meet with your boss, and be
clear about what is expected of you,”
Bennington said. Review your job
description and performance metrics
to make sure you’re on the same
page. Take notes, pay attention and
understand how to ask smart questions when those expectations are
unclear, when you want context on an
assignment or you simply need help.
