barriers to entry are very high," said
Andy Davis, founder and CEO of Trig Avionics Ltd. Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, in
2007, the company launched its product line with
Mode S 1090-ES transponders that were the first
to satisfy the minimum operational performance
standards itemized in RTCA DO-260B, which put
them on top of the TSO 166B list of approved units
that comply with America's 2020 ADS-B/TIS-B
mandate.
January 2004 is Trig's official birthday, and it was
conceived not long after Davis read a news item in an

Aviation Authority was "waiting for industry to pick
up the ball and run it." The "ball" was a prototype
Mode S transponder for light aircraft. The opportunity "caught in my brain," said Davis, smiling at the
memory. "I could do that. How hard could it be?"
That last sentence is now the company's unofficial in-house slogan, according to Davis. An animated engineer who communicates with a jargon-free
vocabulary, his passion comes across as an endless
sunny day. After setting up the necessary systems
and learning about the prototype, Trig started work
on its launch product, the TT31 1090ED ADS-B
Out transponder in late 2004. "We shipped the first
product in early 2007."
Since then, Trig has introduced two VHF communication radios. They have 8.33 kHz and 25 kHz
frequency spacing, which is why they followed the
transponders. Like the Mode S transponder, tighter
frequency spacing was mandated by Europe's air
traffic management organizations so they could
safely increase the capacity of congested airspace
that maxed out the capabilities of the systems the
new avionics replace.
"As you might expect, there was a lot of pushback from the user community," especially among
pilots and owners, like himself, of light general
aviation aircraft. Most appreciated that Mode S,
which communicates in 24-bit code, assigns every
aircraft a unique, fixed code, and that its selective
interrogation and multiple information formats
make it integral to active collision avoidance sys-
