The following information is from the Federal
Aviation Regulations and the Aircraft Owners
and Pilots Association website.

QUESTION:
What ADS-B Out solution is right for aircraft
owners?

ANSWER:
It all depends on what and where they fly.
Title 14 CFR 91.225 defines the ADS-B requirements for a given airspace: Generally, any
airspace that currently requires a transponder
will require ADS-B Out - excluding any aircraft
that was not originally certificated with, or not
subsequently certified with, an installed electrical system.
Installers and aircraft owners need to understand the options. The AOPA has developed
an ADS-B selection tool that will help you
determine the best solutions to consider for
an aircraft. The system is very good for light
general aviation determinations but has some

In 2011, a new Civil Aviation Safety Agreement
was put into force between Canada and the European
Union. It detailed new requirements regarding the
maintenance of aircraft registered to the other party.
Specifically, it detailed the new elements that were

limitations for larger business aircraft flown
internationally.
Another limitation of the ADS-B selection
tool is its basic focus of ADS-B Out compliance.
While the tool proposes to select the "best"
solution, the AOPA's determination of best is
minimum regulatory compliance. The tool does
not consider the added navigation benefit of
upgrading the onboard navigator to WAAS for
enhanced navigation, or the safety benefit of
ADS-B In technology.
Nonetheless, the ADS-B Out selection tool is
a good starting point. It is available online at
aopa.org/Pilot-Resources/Aircraft-Ownership/

and its supplement.
