They decided on the Avidyne IFD540, and an unexpected
benefit of the AEA ADS-B award to install it now rather than
later was Avidyne's incentive of a free AXP340 Mode S transponder with ADS-B Out. This was a contributing factor in

not changed with NextGen, the Silver Crown stack would have
provided many more years of reliable service.
But the infrastructure is changing, and looking at the ADSB mandate, "Mike and I decided that we would not wait until
the last minute," Miller said. "But we weren't going to be early
adopters, either, so we were looking at a 2017 time frame. Then,
Mike won one of the AEA's five $1,000 ADS-B installation
awards at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh (in 2014), and that accelerated our timeline."
Working on their 2017 strategy, the partners, who live in Appleton, just up U.S. 41 from Oshkosh, were roaming the AirVenture exhibit hangars and investigating the different ADS-B solutions. "We looked at the lower-cost ADS-B units, but they really
weren't an option for our non-GPS airplane," Miller said. While
they would meet the mandate's requirements, they would not
enable the partners to fly GPS approaches and T-routes, GPSdefined airways that deliver efficient paths around and through
congested terminal areas, like the one over Chicago O'Hare.
Wading through all the marketing, Miller said, "We were not
feature shopping." Investigating the equipment offered by all
of the name-brand manufacturers, what mattered most was the
big picture, the company's reputation, the support it offered,
and the user interface. "Coming from a tech background, I was
interested in those things," he said, explaining that he worked in
