f you love aviation, gazing up at flying machines
ripping through the sky probably makes your heart
pound. Loops. Barrel rolls. Wingovers. V formation.
It's all incredibly exciting. In the 1920s, when aviation
felt so new, getting a glimpse of a wing walker on
a biplane must have been amazing. Today, a trip to
Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for the Experimental Aircraft
Association's AirVenture treats aviation enthusiasts
to many such marvelous moments as well as a bit of
aviation history in action.
The earliest airshows and aviation competitions in
the U.S. began in 1910. Aviators such as Glenn Curtiss
and Lincoln Beachey rose to fame during those heady,
dangerous days. Throughout the 1920s, one-upmanship
led to increasingly daring tricks and terrible accidents
- all part of the thrill that brought crowds to see these
brave men and women.
But what of the farmer's fields and makeshift airports

that hangared their aircraft and hosted their stunts?
Many still survive today. What's their legacy? What
importance have these small town general aviation
airports played throughout the last 105 years?
Wittman Regional Airport
As you walk among the warbirds and homebuilts,
aerobatic aircraft and ultralights, you may wonder about
the ground beneath your feet. Wittman Regional Airport,
home to AirVenture, is named for renowned air racer
and aircraft designer Steve Wittman. It was built in 1928
to provide airmail service to the Fox Valley. Wittman
managed the airport from 1931 to 1969.
"Steve Wittman operated out of Oshkosh on the north
side of the airport," said Jeff Anderson, Fox Valley
Technical College A&P instructor. "There is a historical
