fills gap in Northeast

few years ago, Bill Hanf recognized an industry
gap in the Northeast - there were plenty of
excellent aircraft maintenance service providers
but few avionics specialists. He set out to change the
equation.
"There were few who truly specialized in avionics,
and fewer who could do comprehensive installations,
troubleshooting, testing and inspections," said Hanf,
who has 25 years of
experience in the avionics
industry, including serving as
an avionics technician in the
U.S. Marine Corps. "I started
Green Mountain Avionics to
fill that need."
With months of market
research and careful planning, Hanf opened his FAAcertified repair station in 2011 at Middlebury State
Airport in Middlebury, Vermont, to provide specialized
avionics services for the area's general aviation aircraft.
"Aircraft owners come from all over the Northeast
region for high-quality repairs and upgrades to
their avionics systems," Hanf explained. "We do
installations in a variety of aircraft, ranging from
small, single-engine airplanes to helicopters to
experimentals. Most service is performed on-site in

Middlebury. However, we sometimes fly our company
aircraft to other airports to provide on-location work
when it is impossible or otherwise inconvenient for the
customer to come to us."
In the beginning, Hanf was the sole technician, renting
hangar space from another aircraft maintenance and
airframe repair shop. Demand grew quickly, allowing
Hanf to take on additional employees with highly
specialized skill sets and to
acquire a facility of his own.
In 2014, Hanf moved into
a new 7,000-square-foot
hangar, a space four times the
size of his original workshop.
In May 2015, he hired his
fifth employee. In the near
future, Hanf plans to expand Green Mountain Avionics'
services to include aircraft rental.
"We're starting with our company demonstrator, a
Cessna 172," he said. "It's equipped with top-of-the-line
avionics, including a Garmin G500 multifunction display
with SVT, GTN 750, GNC 255A, GTX 327, GMA 350,
GDL 88 ADS-B and a panel-docked aera 796 nav unit -
all of which are components that we install."
Keeping up with customer demand has been Hanf's
biggest challenge so far. Even as he expands and grows
