envelope. If for any reason the aircraft starts to approach or
exceed those user-defined limits, the servos engage and they
provide a bit of opposite force feedback to the controls."
Working independently from the autopilot, the ESP-X
functions in the background to provide added flight envelope protection to help avoid inadvertent flight attitudes. It
also will help provide envelope protection while the pilot is
hand-flying the aircraft.
"For example, suppose you were reaching back behind
your seat to get something and the aircraft entered into a
steepening roll situation," he said. "As the bank increases,
the ESP-X servos will provide opposite force to the stick
and help drive it back to straight and level."
Hupe also explained that if for some reason you don't
correct the action, after 15 seconds, the autopilot features
automatic level mode, which will bring the aircraft back
to straight and level. This feature is pilot configurable and
allows the system to take control if the pilot is not responding to the EXP-X's efforts to nudge the aircraft back to the
straight and level.
"The system provides protection based on pitch, roll and
airspeed settings," he said. "It also includes visual cues on the
display that point you back in the right direction. It's designed
to help you stay out of trouble along all three dimensions."
Hupe also said that the ESP-X will automatically disable itself below 200 feet above ground level so it will not
engage during your landing flare.
And fear not aerobatic fans, Garmin hasn't forgotten your
needs and wants.
"You can absolutely disable the ESP-X for aerobatics,"
Hupe said. "We'd make many of our customers mad if we
did not do that. It can be set to default 'on' or 'off' at powerup. You can also put a dedicated switch on the panel to activate it - or just use the touchscreen."
