The measurement of craftsmanship evolves with technology

t seemed a simple assignment: Examine quality
craftsmanship from Aircraft Electronics Association
member shops.
The challenge revealed itself with the first question
posed to a random selection of AEA members. "What
are the hallmarks of exemplary avionics craftsmanship?"
Without exception, silence was the initial response.
Then, said Tim Dyk, avionics manager of the Mission
Aviation Fellowship, "Wow! I have to think about that a
little bit."
After a moment of reflection, Brian Riese, avionics
manager at Wisconsin Aviation, said, "The installation
looks right, like it came that way from the factory."
And Arnold Hill, avionics manager at Des Moines
Flying Service, summarized the assignment's complexity
with, "That's a loaded question."
While they could not readily define craftsmanship, they
immediately stressed its importance. As a key ingredient
of a shop's reputation, economic survival depends on it.

But without specific measurements, quality is subjective.
To customers who only eat fast food, their meals are good
- until they learn what earns a restaurant a Michelin star
and make their own comparison.
In either case, customers get what they pay for.
Regardless of where they are on the quality spectrum,
customer satisfaction is the overriding goal. This is
why restaurants strive, with every meal, to deliver what
they have promoted and promised, because they know
that words from one customer unhappy with the quality
received can quickly tarnish a shining reputation.
When it comes to the hallmarks of good avionics
craftsmanship, certainly, we can do better than Supreme
Court Justice Potter Stewart, who in a 1964 obscenity
case wrote that he could not define pornography, "but I
know it when I see it." Perhaps we can derive the specifics by categorizing the anecdotal examples of work good
and bad revealed during the conversational interrogations
of our sources.
