The company has seen robust business in recent history with
glass-panel installation and retrofit projects.
Rick Peavley, previous president of Vero Beach Avionics and
a member of the Aircraft Electronics Association board of directors, will serve as avionics manager for Sun Aviation. Al Rice,
who was the vice president of Vero Beach Avionics, will serve
as chief inspector and avionics shop manager for Sun.
Sun Aviation's history stretches back to 1929, when Bud
Holman started the company. In fact, Bud Holman was a
member of the group that built the Vero Beach Municipal
Airport. He was known for his involvement in the community,
and he found innovative ways to help the community, as well
as his own business.
At the time, many airplanes flying between Jacksonville and
Miami needed to refuel. Bud Holman purchased the equipment necessary to refuel aircraft, and the company became the
authorized refueling station for Eastern Air Transport in 1932.
Bud Holman became the local manager for the airline, getting
paid $5 per month. Before the end of the decade, Eastern Air
Transport became Eastern Airlines.
Bud Holman and Postmaster J.J. Schumann worked to obtain
direct airmail service to the community in 1935. At the time,
Vero Beach was the smallest community in the U.S. to have the
service. No doubt, their job was made easier by the fact Eastern
was an early airmail contractor.
Bud Holman also was a baseball fan. Through word of
mouth, Holman learned the Brooklyn Dodgers were looking
for a training site. In 1947, he approached the Dodgers and
proposed that the baseball club establish a spring training camp
in Vero Beach. He thought the U.S. Naval Air Station at Vero
Beach would be a good place for the Dodgers and their 26 minor
league teams. According to Bud's son, Bump Holman, the move
to bring the Dodgers to Vero Beach was to help defray expenses.
The Dodgers made Vero Beach their official spring training
camp in 1948. According to Bill Boeding of the Vero Beach
Press-Journal, "Holman Stadium at Dodgertown stands as a
tribute to the man who brought to Vero Beach one of the biggest
attractions and businesses in the United States."
In 2008, the Dodgers played their last spring training game in
Holman Stadium. The relationship Bud Holman started lasted
60 years.
The current CEO of Sun Aviation, Bump Holman became a
pilot for the Dodgers while he was still in high school. He started
