to a solution faster if he feels he's been listened to fairly. You
may also identify issues greater than his performance; in fact,
he may not be the weakest link in the chain, and you could have
some roadblocks to fix.
Eliminate blame. Focus on solutions, not fault. Even if you
have differences of opinion on the performance issue, work
together toward a solution. Ensure he understands what you
expect from him and why this will help him succeed. Help him
envision his behavior post-change and see what he must do to
accomplish it.
Affirm their control. This is a two-part conversation, and he
can either choose to ignore the input - at whatever cost to him
- or go along with the plan you've both created. He's in control
of his behavior, and you can reinforce that by asking, "does this
sound okay?" as you define a resolution.
List corrective feedback. Be specific and understandable.

For example, Walters suggests saying, "The behavior I am seeing is XYZ, and what I need to see is ABC."
Synchronize your understanding. Close the feedback session by establishing the situation is about "us" not "him." Ask,
"how do we make things more effective next time?" Walters
suggested. Then chart a path to that goal that both of you can
follow. By doing so, you've taken an ownership role in making
the solution work, which lets him know you'll be grading his
performance.
POSITIVE CONTROL
Since feedback - whether bad or good - should be timely, smart managers know performance-based conversations
should occur more regularly than annually, or even quarterly,
even if problems haven't occurred. This way, issues don't build
up, because these sessions allow back-and-forth discussions,
which builds trust and communication. Yet for this to become
a priority, you must recognize what pitfalls negative feedback
create, why positive coaching is a better alternative, and how
