he second half of the calendar year signals the
beginning of a more active trade show season,
and it also kicks off an approximately 3.5% to
4% stronger sales period for our avionics manufacturers.
Not to discount the business that takes place in the first
half of the year, but the third and fourth quarters are
when sales historically heat up, according to the AEA
Avionics Market Report.
The push to close out another successful
year is in full swing. Along with the drive
to meet sales targets, long-range business
planning is underway as budgets are being
established, marketing plans are being
finalized, and performance evaluations are
being completed.
With their absence in 2020 and
subsequent return in 2021, trade shows
clearly demonstrated their value and
importance to our industry. The second
half of the year brings EAA's AirVenture
in July and NBAA's Business Aviation Convention and
Exhibition in October. These events, which collectively
generate attendance numbers north of a half-million
people, dictate the schedule for every other trade show
around them and help coordinate the scheduling of the
fall conference series for the AEA.

associate members, the manufacturers and distributors
who support our meetings, this creates a demanding
schedule that runs alongside even more commitments,
including sales conferences, operator conferences, and
type club events. Bottom line, the second half of the
year means show business and ultimately more business
for the industry.
As we close out the year with our flight plan full of
trade shows and conferences, Avionics News
is here to report on the positive signs for
our industry, even as economic headwinds
test our second-half sales figures. Changes
in the post-pandemic market have created
some bright spots and opportunities. Dave
Hughes explains the numbers behind the
surge in aircraft connectivity statistics in
his article " Data Use Growing by 40% Per
Year " beginning on page 48. And Dale Smith
details the evolution of the consumer in his
feature " Meet the 2022 Model-Year Avionics
Customer " on page 38.
The brief absence of trade shows and the proliferation
around the world designed to bring shop owners,
managers and technicians together for OEM training,
sales and product information sessions, regulatory
updates and exhibits. Each August to November, we
meet in three U.S. locations and visit our members in
Canada, Europe and the South Pacific. For many of our
