It's all about the glass
Accustomed to working on a
variety of aircraft types, Jones
served four years in the U.S. Air
Force as a combat technician
specializing in communication and
navigation systems on Sikorsky
MH-53J Pave Low helicopters.
After the military, he worked as
a technician at an aircraft service
center in Atlanta, Georgia, which
sold factory-new Pilatus PC-12
aircraft, and later at a general
aviation avionics shop across the
field at Evansville Regional Airport.
In addition to all of this avionics
experience, Jones also is a private
pilot.
In the avionics hangar at Tri-State
Aero, he tends to single- and twinengine
pistons. As of late, operators
have been requesting glass cockpit
systems.
" We work on Beechcraft King
Airs down to Cessna 310s and 150s,
Piper Navajos and Tomahawks and
everything in between, " Jones said.
" We're installing a lot of glass,
particularly Aspen Avionics PFDs
and MFDs, plus a variety of other
systems they may need or want.
Aspen has been at the top of the
list with Avidyne not far behind it.
Although retrofit glass has been
around for a while now, it's still
trickling down to these smaller
aircraft. It's keeping us busy. "
On an upcoming Cirrus SR22,
Jones will be installing the threescreen
Aspen Evolution 2500 Max
glass cockpit, Avidyne IFD440
FMS/GPS navigator and Avidyne
DFC90 autopilot.
" For good, older aircraft with
a good history, we're seeing that
people are willing to make an
investment in avionics right now, "
Ballard said.
At Tri-State Aero, customers
aren't only local, they're regional
operators willing to fly across state
lines to reach the repair station.
" Our biggest selling point is
that we're right in the middle
of the region, right in between
Indianapolis, St. Louis, Louisville
and Nashville, " Ballard said. " Our
airport offers the same tower
services and many of the same
amenities as larger airports, but it's
not as congested. It's very easy to
stop in for fuel and service work,
and now avionics installations. " q
