in the aviation industry and government leaders to make
2 billion gallons of cost-competitive SAF available for
use in 2030, later increasing that goal to 3 billion gallons
after collaborating with the White House.
" Rapidly expanding the development and deployment
of SAF is the single most important thing we can do to
continue to reduce climate impacts of aviation, " Pohle
said. " We recognized that the challenge posed by climate
change was continuing to intensify,
and we realized that, as an industry,
we needed to do more. "
Considering current SAF production
levels and distribution
challenges, the increased goal is
an aggressive one, but A4A has
confidence it's not only achievable,
it's critical.
SAF currently costs three to five
times as much as conventional,
petroleum-based jet fuel, A4A explained.
The association acknowledged
the economic challenge of
more widespread utilization of
SAF, saying " commercially viable
SAF " is needed for the product
to be a successful contributor to
sustainability.
" Essentially, 'commercially
viable SAF' means 'affordable' SAF that will allow us
to keep flying affordable for the traveling and shipping
public, " Pohle said.
Business aviation has also increased its commitment
to sustainability and the use of SAF. Business aviation
accounts for only .04% of global emissions created by
human activity, according to a 2019 International Civil
Aviation Organization study, but business aviation's
commitment to sustainability efforts is similar to the
airline industry's commitment.
The " Business Aviation Commitment on Climate
Change " press briefing in November 2021 described
business aviation's previous objectives and status:
1. Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by
2050, relative to 2005. The trajectory is on track
for success, and the group questioned if it was
aggressive enough.
2. Improve fuel efficiency 2% per year from 2010 to
2020. This objective was achieved.
3. Carbon neutral growth from 2020. This objective
is on track.

As a result of the progress business
aviation demonstrated in sustainability
efforts, the organization established
new goals or renewed its commitment
to existing goals, primarily around
turbine, electric and hybrid aircraft.
These goals are:
1.
Obtain net-zero carbon dioxide
emissions by 2050.
2.
Improve fuel efficiency 2% per
year from 2020 to 2030.
3.
Continue carbon-neutral growth
from 2020.
" Right now, given the window
we are looking at going to 2050, the
maximum in terms of SAF adoption
we get to by 2050 is about 70 to
75%, " said Thomas Fissellier, head of
strategy and analytics at Bombardier
Business Aircraft.
Fissellier reported SAF could be 66 to 81% of total
fuel consumption by 2050, based on current projections.
An 80% adjustment is applied to reflect industry
consensus of the impact of SAF versus traditional jet
fuel in carbon dioxide reduction.
" The bottom line is that we are now on track to reach
about 4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions by
2050 as an industry, which would represent about 70 to
75% reduction compared to 2005, " Fissellier said.
This forecast would exceed previous targets of 50%
reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
