define, document and communicate the goals and objectives
with those who are tasked with accomplishing them.
The next element to consider is the availability of
resources. Generally, when considering resources, everyone
targets the physical resources, but I think the most often
overlooked resource is time. Of course, we may be pressured
to accomplish a given task. The missing element is the time
to accomplish the support tasks. We often talk about the
paperwork, whether directly related to the task, in support of
the business, or a hazard report for the safety management
system. Management routinely " talks " about the importance
of these efforts, but then fails to schedule the time necessary
to effectively process the administrative support. Without the
documentation, measuring the effectiveness of the goals and
objectives, incremental improvement is nearly impossible.
The final element is that of expertise. If you are reading
this, you're all in; you're reading the available literature. This
comes from a myriad of sources. Nearly every trade journal,
every business journal, every publication I read offers new
insight. And then, of course, there is the training offered through
your association, beginning with the easiest access via the
online AEA AERO platform, offering on-demand training and
education to the membership, worldwide. This is followed
with the training offered in conjunction with the annual AEA
Convention and AEA Connect Conferences, including extensive
OEM-led product-specific training. Completing this triad of
resources is the classroom instruction at AEA headquarters in
Lees Summit, Missouri.
As we get ready for the annual AEA Convention later this
month, let us consider a new year's resolution of continuous
improvement, an incremental improvement. Think about
those seven objectives with an eye toward specific,
measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based goals and
objectives. Then, document and communicate those goals.
Baseline where you are today and measure where you are
this time next year.
As the owner of the business, give yourself the resources
necessary to effectively implement and measure your goals
and objectives. q
