When did you earn
your A&P license?
I was working on my
Also, I wanted to fly Schweizers.
They don't have Schweizers in
Norway. I think there may be one
flight school in southern Norway, or
at least there used to be, when I was
looking at my training options.
Most Europeans come to the U.S.
for their training because it's a lot
less expensive, and it's easier to get
experience afterward. You just have
to get your ATP (airline transport
pilot's license) and then you can
convert it to a JAA license. That was
my plan, but I think my plan changed
for the better.
Why were you
interested in learning
in a Schweizer?
Because they are more
forgiving, and they have a
conventional cyclic. Since I
planned to become a professional
helicopter pilot, I decided I should
fly something that's compatible
with the rest of the industry.
Plus, you have to learn using
the throttle because they don't
have a governor, so you have to
pay attention to your power all the
time. I know a lot of people get
their fixed-wing license first and
then a helicopter add-on since that's
cheaper, but I was determined to
become a good helicopter pilot with
as many hours as possible before
transitioning to turbines.
What other differences
do you see in aviation
between the United States
and Norway?
I couldn't do what I do in Norway.
I couldn't make a living at it anyway.
There's just not enough general
aviation in Norway. Everything is more
expensive over there. People don't
usually own their own aircraft. They
have flight clubs where people own
aircraft together.

side of Washington near Seattle
where there's a lot of fog and
rain, which slows down training.
To make the most of the time, I
attended A&P school while also
learning to fly. After I earned
my A&P license, I worked for
Snohomish Flying Service, a
family-owned FBO on Harvey
Field. I learned most of what I
know from the mechanics there,
and I worked on the helicopters I
learned to fly in.
Why did you start your
own aircraft maintenance
and avionics shop?
I started my own business
because I had a dream of having
a repair station where I could
certify instruments and radios. I
started doing some work on my
own on weekends while still in
Snohomish. Then my husband
wanted to use his GI bill for
flight training, so we moved to
eastern Washington. I worked as
a contractor for several places,
