Many call me over when they cannot get their audio
generator to produce 350 kHz. At that point, I start
asking questions.
How many MHz is 350 kHz? Most are quick with the
answer, which is 0.35 MHz. At this point, I remind the
student the AM broadcast band starts at .55 MHz, and
automatic direction finders work at 0.2 MHz. Then I
ask, how many MHz is 2,500 kHz? Again, the answer
comes quickly: 2.5 MHz. At this point, I tell them the
AM broadcast band ends at approximately 1.6 MHz, and
WWV broadcasts on a frequency of 2.5 MHz. I suggest
they scratch out the " k " and read it again. Then the test
makes sense. They can test from 350 Hz up to 2,500 Hz,
which are all audio frequencies.
They get through all the VHF navigation tests and
move on to glideslope tests. Again, I wait. The manual
asks them to test the sensitivity of the system (ability to
receive weak signals) at the lowest, middle and highest
operating frequencies. On the data sheet, the three
frequencies are printed as 329.15 MHz, 332 MHz and
335.3 MHz. Did you catch the error?

Some report the unit didn't work at 335.3 MHz,
and others will say when they set the generator for the
associated VHF navigation frequency of 110.3 MHz,
the generator does not set the glideslope frequency to
335.3 MHz. Typically, this problem occurs between
the reading assignment and lecture and the quiz on
glideslope systems. I require students to memorize
the frequencies used and the number of channels for
glideslope. The questions asked by students depend
on how successful they have been in memorizing the
lowest and highest glideslope frequencies. A student
who knows the highest frequency used is 335 MHz will
ask one type of question, whereas a student who does
not have the frequencies memorized will ask another
type.
With the glideslope error, I get a chance to reiterate
the importance of knowing the frequencies for various
avionics systems. At first, it may seem like a rather
ponderous educational exercise since they can look up
