ne of the events giving rise to this article came
after an avionics upgrade to a Piper Saratoga. The
upgrade included installing a Garmin 750Xi and
demoting the existing GNS 530W to the No. 2 position.
With all that pricey hardware taking up space, there wasn't
room for an audio panel in the stack, so the owner chose
the remote-mounted option, using the 750 to configure the
airplane's communications. As luck would have it, the 750
" fell down " during the airplane's first long trip, as it neared
busy Class B airspace, and the pilot was unable to change
frequencies or radios. After talking it over with the one
controller he could reach, he ended up diverting to a nontowered
airport well short of his destination.
As it happened, an avionics technician was present on the
field. The tech pulled the 750 to begin a warranty exchange
and then put it back in the stack. Along the way, something
was reset and - violà! - the remote audio panel selected

the 530, which worked as expected. The pilot managed to
complete the trip.
One of the factors behind this tale involved scheduling:
The pilot retrieved the Saratoga outside the avionics
shop's working hours, and there was no one available to
brief him on his new panel's operation. It was less about
problems with the installation and more about infant
mortality, coupled with the pilot's inexperience with the new
equipment.
SAFETY CONCERNS DON'T END WITH THE LOGBOOK ENTRY
This episode reminded me of the first time I ever
retrieved an airplane from a maintenance shop. Involved
were a club's Piper Archer II and a scheduled inspection.
The bill had been paid, and I arrived after the shop closed
for the day. Being young and ignorant of the likelihood
the airplane was in worse condition coming out of the
shop than when it went in, I waved goodbye to my ride
and launched on the ferry flight. I soon discovered the
