A
s the world continued shaking off lingering
effects from the COVID-19 pandemic, the
avionics industry assembled in New Orleans
last March to reflect, reassess and regroup. In the face of
lingering worldwide supply chain issues, realignments in
employer/employee relationships and economic upheavals
both large and small, many also came simply to celebrate
that we're still here and still making progress. That progress
was reflected in the annual new product introductions session
during the first day of the 65th annual Aircraft Electronics
Association International Convention & Trade Show.
Progress is a relative thing, of course. It can come
suddenly and with little warning, or it can be incremental,
evolutionary. How it's labeled depends on one's reference
point and what came before.
Is the worldwide avionics industry making progress?
Absolutely. Has it progressed to the point the same onesize-fits-all
integrated flight deck with all the bells and
whistles can be installed in both an Aeronca and an
Airbus for $5,000? Nope, and that's not going to happen.
What is happening between those extremes? Vendors and
manufacturers continue analyzing their markets and refining
their offerings to meet demand and push the limits of what
is possible and profitable. That's the surest sign yet that
COVID-19's worldwide impacts are on the wane, and that
innovation and refinement are coming back to the fore. Read
on for the evidence from 29 companies that unveiled new
products at the AEA Convention on March 28.
ACR Artex
James Hunter, sales and product director for ACR Artex,
briefed AEA Convention attendees on his company's two
newest offerings: the ELT 5000 (DT) and the ELT 4000S.
Both are designed with specific features to meet their
intended roles.
The ELT 5000 (DT) is a fixed emergency locator
transmitter incorporating distress
tracking to meet the ICAO
GADSS ADT requirement
applicable in January 2023,
in the aftermath of Malaysian
Airlines Flight 370, a Boeing
777 that disappeared in
March 2014 on a flight
from Kuala Lumpur to
Beijing. When triggered
ELT 5000 (DT)
by a potential distress condition meeting the criteria, the
Artex ELT 5000 (DT) activates and begins transmitting 406
MHz distress messages with the current location in real
time while the aircraft is airborne. Combining it with an
autonomous distress trigger like Artex's ADT 5000 provides
complete GADSS compliance as per EUROCAE ED-237
and ICAO recommendations, including return link service.
Lithium-battery safety is managed with an innovative
venting and containment system the company said assures
continued airworthiness. The unit's GNSS input is provided
via a combined 121.5/406 MHz and GNSS blade antenna.
Parent company ACR Electronics has signed an agreement
with The Boeing Company to supply the ELT 5000 (DT) for
new-production aircraft.
The company's other new product, the ELT 4000S, is a
portable survival ELT transmitting on 121.5 and 406 MHz.
It's based on the Artex ELT 4000 system and is powered
by a lithium-free battery. The ELT 4000S also is buoyant
and automatically activates when deployed in water, while
manual activation is used on land. An internal GPS (GNSS)
provides position data for the 406 MHz transmission.

AEROTEAM Training Solutions
AEROTEAM is a Danish company founded in 2004 by
former Scandinavian Airlines pilot Søren Seindal Agner.
His aviation career began in 1987, and he currently works
as a training manager and ground instructor. His company
offers training for multiple aviation-industry roles, including
flight and cabin crews,
CRM assessment,
ground operations and
dangerous goods. The
company's stated goals
include enhancing flight
safety through advanced crew training and urging active
trainee involvement in the classroom.
A mission statement on the company's website for its
new MAYDAY concept notes, " We have developed several
training tools to make classroom training more interesting
and motivating for both the students and the instructors.
We believe in classroom training as the best way to provide
ground training for flight crew and cabin crew. However,
the training has to be of high quality in order to motivate
