» » » Pat Olson, the 'First Lady of Test Equipment'
been more than just an employee;
she is considered part of the
organization's family.
Upon her retirement, Olson plans
to enjoy time with her beautiful
family, traveling and gardening. Here
are some of Olson's thoughts as she
reflected on a 48-year career.
How did you get
started in the industry?
I stumbled into the world
P
at Olson has been a valued
friend, colleague and
member of the Aero Express
family for more than 20 years. She
recently announced her retirement
from the industry as of Dec. 31,
2022.
For nearly 48 years, Olson has
been an advocate for her customers,
a trailblazer for women, and created
a path for herself and others in the
industry.
The staff at Aero Express, an AEA
member company since 1996, has
expressed much gratitude for her
service and work ethic, as Olson has

of aviation/avionics in
November 1974. I answered
an ad in a newspaper -
" billing clerk needed " - at
a business on the Burbank
Airport and got an interview
with the company's founder/
owner and his manager. I was
told later that Ed Lansberg of
EDMO decided to hire me as I
looked sturdy enough to carry
King Radio boxes up the stairs
to the shop in the hangar
where the company's office
was located.
I ended up being a " Girl
Friday " of sorts. I answered
the phones, placed orders
with vendors on a telex
machine, wrote up sales
orders and invoices, packaged
and shipped orders, helped
maintain inventory records,
and cleaned the bathrooms. I
did appreciate Ed's faith in my
ability to learn and perform
all these duties.
What was the industry
like when your career
began?
It was an interesting time;
business was getting busy. Guys
came home from Vietnam and
started avionics shops or started
working in shops. EDMO became
one of King Radio's distributors.
I carried my share of KX-170s
and KI-201s up those hangar
stairs and managed to not fall.
The business grew rapidly, and I
was fortunate enough to be part
of that growth and expansion.
What were some of the
challenges you faced?
I experienced many
challenges in those early days
of getting customers to talk to
me. Many wanted to speak to
one of the guys even though
I was the only one available.
They insisted on a call back from
someone who could talk about
fixing radios and what they
might need for their application.
I obliged them and would get Ed
or my manager, Tom Storli, to
call them back. But eventually,
I convinced them I could help
them and was not interested
in trying to pretend to know
what I didn't know. I was also
fortunate enough to work with
Bob Kimmerly, whom EDMO
hired from King Radio. We
worked together for many years;
Pat Olson, formerly of Aero Express for more than
20 years, recently announced her retirement from
the industry at the close of 2022.
