ment work, will leverage Honeywell's
aerospace know-how with DENSO's
high-quality volume production. The
aim is for zero operating emissions with
an air-cooled engine with low operating
costs. A prototype 4-kilogram engine
is designed to extract 100 kilowatts of
power. The e-motor has its rotor and
stator in a centrifugal or radial configuration
compared to traditional axial
designs.
Yves Yemsi, chief operating officer
for Lilium, said his company is making
great progress with the Honeywell
Anthem integrated flight deck and flight
control computers and is deepening its
relationship with the aerospace company
by partnering with it and DENSO on the
e-motor. " The collaboration with these
two powerhouses takes us further along
the path to revolutionizing regional air
mobility, " Yemsi said.
As weight on its FBW system continues
to be optimized for this market
and as electronics become smaller, there
may be a point where this technology
becomes accessible to other aviation
segments. The advances in AAM could
potentially transform other segments of
aviation with these new technologies as
well. " If you had asked 15 years ago if a
UAM-sized, civil aircraft would be flying
passengers with fly-by wire - people
would have probably said, 'I don't know
when that is going to happen' - and we
now have a very clear line of sight to that
reality, " Xu said.
Some eVTOL aircraft manufacturers
plan to conduct Part 135 operations
themselves for air taxi service in urban
areas, for example, and may provide
their own maintenance, repair and
overhaul. " It all depends on what the
customer (OEM) wants to do, " Xu said.
The computer chips and the systems
will be more advanced to accommodate
a high level of processing capability.
Anthem is also a modular system with
its own environment and development
tools so that Honeywell and third parties,
including aircraft manufacturers, can
develop their own custom applications.
" This is like the iOS and Android model
where you have the compute platform,
the operating system, the middleware,
but then you have all of these application
program interfaces and the ability to
build custom applications on top of the
platform, " Xu said. " This is unprecedented
capability. It has helped us on the
UAM side because this is a new space
with unique requirements so that custom
applications need to be hosted. " q
