9.45 inches high, 7.1 inches wide, and 2.25 inches
thick, and weighs 4.2 pounds. Its lithium-ion battery
powers more than three continuous hours of avionics
RF testing from 200 kilohertz to 2 gigahertz. Using
software-defined signal processes, the test functions
generate, receive and measure
complex avionics signals from
narrow-band analog or digital
communications to complex
navigation and wide-band pulse
or data protocols.
The SDR-Omni comes
with a complete accessory kit
for all applications, Schmale
noted. This includes an antenna
coupler for the transponder and
Federal Aviation Administration
Part 43 examination, a test that
not only saves time, because it
takes roughly 15 seconds, it also fills out the test report
(avoiding transcription mistakes) that technicians can
download via USB or send via Wi-Fi to a printer. A selfcalibration
verification reduces the need for trips to a
calibration lab and tells users the unit is ready to test.
It has a built-in GPS for accurate ADS-B testing,
both In and Out for 1090 and 978 UAT systems. It also
possesses a GPS simulator. Naturally, it tests VOR and
ILS systems, combined with the localizer, glideslopes, and
marker beacon, as well as AM and FM HF, VHF, and UHF
communication radios, TCAS, DME, ELTs, and EPIRBs.
Rounding out its capabilities, Schmale added, are tests for
audio distortion in aircraft audio systems, VSWR, distance
to fault, and cable loss.
Being software driven,
over time TIC will add new
capabilities to the SDROmni
through user-installed
software upgrades. In its blog at
aeroexpress.com, the company
goes into more detail about the
unit and some of its tests. " A
