DCC offers intensive one-year training in aviation maintenance

t Hudson Valley Regional Airport in Wappingers
Falls, New York, a Gulfstream GIII sits on
the ramp next to a new $16 million training
center. A joint venture between Dutchess Community
College, New York State and
Dutchess County, the Aviation
Education Center supports
students enrolled in the school's
pilot, aviation management
and aviation maintenance
technician programs. Most of
the new, state-of-the-art center is
dedicated to the intensive training and certification of aircraft
mechanics to help fill local and global demand.
The college held its first aviation maintenance classes
in 2021 - only two years ago. Genna Suraci, program
coordinator and instructor, came out of retirement in 2018 to
plan, develop and oversee the project.
" I was here five years prior to the center's opening,
planning and designing it, acquiring the equipment and
tooling, working with the building contractors and obtaining
FAA Part 147 approval, " said Suraci, a licensed airframe
and powerplant mechanic and former aviation maintenance
instructor who also served as principal of a local technical

school. " Craig Reding was actually the first person to work
on it, and he continued on in a volunteer role. We spent a lot
of time together developing projects and building trainers. "
The Aviation Education Center includes two hangars, several
classrooms, equipped labs and a
7,000-square-foot ramp.
" We also have a sheet metal
classroom and a specialized
tool and equipment room with
calibrated tooling, " Suraci said.
" There's a technical library with
hard copies of the manuals.
Students can print out wiring schematics and electronic
versions of the manuals. "
Two training options
Dutchess Community College offers two aviation
maintenance training options - a certificate program that
leads to an A&P license and an aviation maintenance
technician program that leads to an associate degree in
applied science.
" Most of our students are here for the certificate program,
which is one year, " Suraci said. " You can take an extra
semester and get the associate degree. "
