MIKE INGRAM President and CEO of Shadin Avionics

ccording to Mike Ingram, president and
chief executive officer of Minneapolis,
Minnesota-based Shadin Avionics, there are
many paths to the role of CEO. For Ingram,
it was through engineering, avionics design and product
management - in the United States and 8,000 miles
away in China.
" My early avionics experience helps me better
understand our customers' challenges, " Ingram said.
" Aerospace, especially avionics and technical sales, is
much less about selling and more about solving problems.
I need to be able to dive down to a certain level in the
initial conversation to understand the challenge and be
able to connect the right people, either in my organization
or others in the industry, to help solve it. "
Ingram has devoted more than two decades to
solving problems. He studied electrical and computer
engineering in college and earned a master's degree
in ocean engineering, which primarily focused on
underwater acoustics and positioning. During graduate
school, he worked with early GPS and inertial
navigation systems and continued with advanced GPS
and robotics at Draper Laboratory in Cambridge,
Massachusetts.
Ingram shifted his knowledge of GPS toward aviation

when he accepted a position at Avidyne, where he
spent nearly 12 years in systems engineering during the
company's early days.
" It was the formative years for Avidyne; I just loved
what we were doing, working to bring glass cockpits to
small airplanes, which was a very new thing in the 2000s, "
said Ingram, who assisted with the initial FlightMax
Entegra MFD user interface design and certification.
Ingram was also part of the engineering team that
moved from Boston, Massachusetts, to Melbourne,
Florida, to develop the next-generation FlightMax
Entegra Release 9.
" We built our own FMS, our own global WAAS GPS,
digital radio and all of the other components that go
into an integrated cockpit, " he said. " Over the five or so
years of design, I gained more and more responsibility.
I led the systems team, then took over the software, and
eventually most of the hardware engineering as well. "
Gaining a healthy perspective
For Ingram, those early leadership responsibilities
marked the beginning of several transitions that would
come to trace his career thus far - technical to product
management to business roles overseeing strategic
growth, sales and marketing.
