" I wanted to have more ownership and more
accountability for the product, " he said. " As a product
manager, you own the product from cradle to grave.
As an engineer, you're a big part of the development,
but you're only a part of it. I enjoy the larger view that
comes with full ownership of a product. "
After Avidyne, Ingram served as vice president of
strategy and growth at Aviage Systems, a joint venture
between GE and the Aviation Industry Corporation of
China, commonly known as AVIC. He spent six years in
Shanghai teaching engineers how to integrate avionics
systems into the Chinese-built COMAC C919 airliner, a
time Ingram recalls fondly.
" It was a unique adventure and really fun, " he said. " Our
kids went to international school and learned Mandarin.
Instead of using a car and driver like most expats, my
wife and I bought a minivan and got our Chinese driver's
license. After taking a half-English, half-Chinese written
driving test, we were able to travel all around China and
see so much of a different part of the world. "
Spending time in China gave Ingram an eye-opening
perspective of Chinese aviation and the aviation industry
as a whole, particularly something most of us take for
granted.
" The Chinese are far behind us, " Ingram said.
" They're good at composites and some other things, but
when it comes to integration, solving certain engineering
problems and certification, they have many, many years
to catch up.
" My time in China made me respect that the United
States and Europe - FAA, EASA and Western companies
- have invested heavily in aerospace and in safety and
certification. The safety record of air transport aviation
in the West is incredible versus China, Russia and some
other places. Going through the right safety processes and
safety analyses takes a long time and costs lots of money,
but it has paid off by creating much safer products. "
