SAFETY GROUPS CONTINUE

he General Aviation Joint Safety Committee
(previously the General Aviation Joint Steering
Committee) and U.S. Helicopter Safety Team
continue working toward safer skies. Both groups are
comprised of government and industry stakeholders, using
data-driven accident and safety data analyses to recommend
and promote consensus-based risk mitigation.
National Transportation Safety Board accident data
provides some of the groups' research materials, while other
data is gleaned from the Aviation Safety Information Analysis
and Sharing initiative.
ASIAS is a voluntary program between the Federal
Aviation Administration, operators, the pilot community,
maintainers, and industry stakeholders to promote the open
exchange of de-identified safety data. The system's objective
is to identify systemic risks and aid in the development of
proactive mitigations that can be implemented before it leads
to an accident or serious incident. Data is protected from
disclosure to encourage sharing and is used only to advance
safety.
ASIAS continues to grow with 47 commercial air carriers
(121) and 151 general aviation and Part 135 air carriers

participating, along with some rotorcraft operators, MROs,
and flight training organizations as of Jan. 31, 2023.
Both GAJSC and USHST actively promote participation
in ASIAS, with USHST ramping up its efforts to encourage
helicopter operators to join ASIAS in 2021, building on the
successes of airline and GA operators over the years.
Jens Hennig, vice president of operations for the General
Aviation Manufacturers Association and the industry chair
for the GAJSC Safety Analysis Team, said nascent work with
flight training community participation in ASIAS is gaining
traction, with participating organizations presenting their
findings to other flight training organizations annually at the
University Aviation Association.
" We want this program to continue to grow so industry and
FAA can use the anonymously submitted data to mitigate the
risk of a developing accident scenario, " Hennig said.
According to the FAA, " ASIAS is an opportunity for pilots
to provide the FAA critical safety information. The FAA
thoroughly reviews multiple data sources, including ASIAS,
to identify potential risk trends before they lead to serious
incidents. This has helped create the safest period in aviation
history. "
