and also to participate in ASIAS.
Last year, the GAJSC published the General Aviation
Midair Collision Risk study.
" Midair collisions are a threat to general aviation
safety. The study provides insight on potential risk areas at
certain locations in the national airspace system, " the FAA
said of the study.
The study is based on ASIAS data, which demonstrates GA
operations have a consistently higher rate of traffic alert and
collision avoidance system resolution advisories than Part 121
airline operations. The study also considered tau TCAS RA
simulator using national offload program radar surveillance,
ADS-B data, flight operational quality assurance program
data, and text-based safety reports.
This data was used to identify hot spots or areas of higher
risks of midair collisions. Three of those locations became
case studies at which ASIAS analysts met with air traffic
controllers and pilots to validate the initial results. Then,
ASIAS analysts applied the same concepts nationwide. The
top 50 locations for simulated GA TCAS RA events are
identified in the study.
" We want to get this study in the hands of pilots who can
affect safety change, " said Hennig, who encourages all GA
operators to socialize the study with their pilots and include it
in training materials.
The GAJSC's current working group is focusing on nonpowerplant
system components failure (or system component
failure-non-powerplant). The accident set utilized by the
working group includes a wide range of causes, including
misrigging, serious structural failure, and some maintenance
or build errors. Other accidents were caused by pilot error
- inadvertently exceeding aircraft limitations or intentional
aerobatics outside the aircraft's structural limitations.
The SCF-NP working group's final report, including safety
enhancements (i.e., recommendations), should be available
later this year or early 2024.
The USHST's popular All Hands webinar series continues
to provide expert perspectives on timely safety matters.
Recent webinars focused on unintended flight into instrument
meteorological conditions and bird strike mitigation. The
webinars are free for public use on the USHST's website at
ushst.org.
All GA operators are encouraged to follow the work of the
GAJSC or USHST and also to participate in ASIAS. While
digital data monitoring through a G1000 or flight data recorder
is ideal for ASIAS purposes, pilots can also submit text-based
reports through the initiative.
The FAA continues to find value in these FAA/industry
safety initiatives as well as the Commercial Aviation Safety
Team, with Acting Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety
David H. Boulter including the groups in recent testimony
before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on
Transportation and Infrastructure Aviation Safety.
" Our collaborative efforts with long-standing groups like
the Commercial Aviation Safety Team, the General Aviation
Joint Safety Committee, and the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team,
help us achieve our collective safety mission and continue to
push the envelope in finding ways to enhance safety for all
stakeholders, " Boulter said. q
