case, it is 10 NM straight north. This information needs
to be programmed (entered) into the R-NAV unit. As
a result, we call this side the programmed side of the
triangle.
Since the angle between north 360 degrees and west
270 degrees is 90 degrees, we have one angle of our
triangle. We have two sides as described previously. Do
you remember this triangle from class, or perhaps The
Wizard Of Oz? In this case, the triangle is solvable using
the Pythagorean theorem. To save space, we'll simply
report the bearing to the waypoint is 45 degrees and the
distance is the square root of 200, or 14.14 NM.
Keep in mind, the R-NAV is constantly doing this
calculation. So, as the aircraft shown in Figure 1 turns
toward the waypoint, the triangle will no longer be an
isosceles triangle. But that's not a problem because the
R-NAV will continue to calculate.
To certify an R-NAV, one must make a flight to a
known location and make note of errors. The first error
is called along-track error. Along-track error shows up
as an error in distance and results from the waypoint
distance being calculated as being too long or too short.
The second error is called cross-track error. Cross-track
error results from the waypoint being too far to the left
